Tulsa, Okla. In August 2024, Love Mobile negotiated with Google’s “Grow with Google” initiative to secure free professional certifications for students, family members and faculty at Booker T. Washington High School. By promoting the opportunity through its subscriber network and coordinating with school leaders, Love Mobile made sure North Tulsa residents could access Google’s industry-recognized, self-paced online training at no cost.

Booker T. Washington High School: A Community Anchor

Founded in 1913, Booker T. Washington High School has long been a cornerstone of North Tulsa, a historically Black neighborhood – the school remains a magnet campus offering Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs for 1,280 students across grades 9–12 GreatSchools. Today, its student body is 69 percent minority, with 54 percent qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch U.S. News & World ReportSchoolDigger. Despite economic challenges in the surrounding community—where median household income is about $41,000 versus $70,000 county-wide—the school boasts a 100 percent graduation rate, outperforming district and state averages ed-stats.state.ok.us.

This environment—high achievement amid systemic inequity—makes Booker T. Washington an ideal partner for digital-skills initiatives aimed at closing opportunity gaps.

Program Delivery and Support

1. Self-Paced Online Learning
   Participants accessed Google’s platform whenever their schedules allowed.

2. Community Promotion
   Love Mobile spread the word via subscriber newsletters, social media and school bulletins.

3. Regular Check-Ins
   Learners gathered for a kickoff pep rally, a mid-program fireside chat with alumni mentors and a graduation celebration honoring every certificate earned.

4. Technical Access
   Booker T. Washington kept computer labs open evenings and weekends and provided Wi-Fi credentials for participants without home internet.

Addressing the Tech Opportunity Gap

The U.S. labor market projects roughly 356,700 annual openings in computer and information technology occupations through 2033, with software developers, quality-assurance analysts and testers expected to grow 17 percent—nearly five times the rate of all jobs U.S. News & World Report. Yet nationally, 40 percent of lower-income adults lack home broadband and similar shares lack a desktop or laptop ed-stats.state.ok.us.

By securing no-cost Google certifications and ensuring local access, Love Mobile’s program removes financial and technical barriers. Underserved North Tulsa residents can now compete for hundreds of thousands of tech openings each year—shifting household incomes upward and fueling community reinvestment.

In Fall 2025 this cohort will offer up to 500 seats, expanding access for more North Tulsa residents to enroll in Google’s self-paced certificates at no cost.
